Craft Lesson for SIDEWALK CIRCUS
Background
Children in Elementary School years have a very creative imagination. This book allows them to see how someone could perceive something other than what is really going on. I think most children would understand this book.
Materials
Sidewalk Circus by Paul Fleischman and Kevin Hawkes
Blank paper
Crayons, Colored Pencils or Markers
Pencil
Activity
First I would go through the story with the children and ask them if they had ever been to a circus. Next I would ask the children if they had any examples imagining things that weren’t really there like in the story. This would just be a fun creative activity for the children. I would have them draw a story of their own with no words at first. Then after they are finished have all the children look at the pictures and each write what they think the story is about. After everyone is done then have the child who drew the picture come up and explain their story. It will be very amusing to see what some of the children come up with. They have such vivid imaginations at the elementary age.

Mora: Yum!MmMm!Que Rico!

This book was very interesting. At first I found the reading a little confusing. It got easier as I went on. The facts about the differant sproutings were very informative and interesting. I found some new things out and I'm sure children can learn a lot from this book. The illustrations were beautiful and very well done. They matched the text very well the vibrant colors make it a "happy" book to read. I like how it is not just your basic book it is full of facts. Again I am very glad you introduced me to this book!

Chapter 10

I found Chapter 10 on Modern Fantasy to be very interesting. There are many different Categories about it. I feel it is very important for children to be able to use there imaginations and have creative thinking. At the same time I feel it is important for children to understand that what they are reading is not real and it is all made up. We need to be able to imagine magic and hero's. Being able to imagine and create things is necessary. In the 6th grade I remember Charlotte's Web by E.B. White being one of my absolute favorites.

Dr. Seuss: My Many Colored Days

I really enjoyed this book by Dr. Seuss. I have always enjoyed his books. My favorite one growing up was Green Eggs and Ham. I had not heard of this book before this class but I'm glad we read it. The book is very colorful and captivating. I loved how the text would change with emotion it kept the reading interesting. The book was really good at making you actually feel the color with the emotion the child was feeling.

Children's Literature Briefly Chapter 18

After reading chapter 18 I found it very true how textbooks are often unappealing to students. I remember hating to just read out of the text book then have a quiz or test. Being in the Post-Bach program is the first time my classes were not like this. This is why I enjoy it so much. I really do think that if you apply more “trade books” to lesson’s students may be more cooperative and want to learn. Being a teacher is about being creative and getting your students involved. I feel that if a teacher just makes students read then take a test then they are not applying themselves as a teacher at all.

In chapter 7 I found wordless picture books to be very intriguing. Before now I have never noticed any wordless picture books, but I really like them. I like how one can make up there own stories to the pictures. These books work the mind. Children are able to create their own text and when they get to the right age they can write in whatever they are seeing from the pictures.
In chapter 8 I totally agree with Bernard Lonsdale and Helen Mackintosh on how they say “Experiences with poetry should be pleasurable and should never be associated with work.” As a child I remember poetry not being so bad it was as I got older I grew to dislike it more and more. There was no particular reason that I can recall it just did not interest me. So maybe if my high school teachers would have taught it differently then I would have a different opinion.

Chapter 4 made me realize just how important illustrations are to the text. They have to compliment the text, if they don’t then it makes the story less interesting I think. Craft Lesson for Apple Pie 4th of July
This is a very simple activity.
All you will need is paper, crayons or colored pencils, paper and Janet Wong's Apple Pie 4th of July.
For the Rhyming activity you may need some index cards with rhyming words it is really your choice on what you would like to do.
For this book I think I would have the children draw a picture of what the 4th of July means to them and how they might celebrate. I would also have them write a description of their drawing on the back of the paper. I would do some rhyming activities with them as well.

Activity for Buzz
This activity is to help children learn high frequency words by making and writing the words.
You Need:
Buzz by Janet Wong
Magnetic whiteboard, chalkboard or chart with Velcro
Magnetic letters
Dry-erase markers or chalk
From Teaching Resources:
High frequency Word Cards.
Making Words Sheets (two per child)
Teach
Explain to the children that today you are going to help them learn some important words.
Place a high frequency word card (can, for example) on which ever board or chart you choose.
Build the word with magnetic letters or letter cards.
Ask the Children what they notice about the word.
Then write the word quickly from beginning to end without stopping. Explain that there are some words you need to know how to read quickly or write quickly.
Repeat this process with more high frequency words. Ask the children to assist you on some of the steps in making the words.
Show the children the Making Words Sheet. Explain that they should take a word card, place it in the first column, say it, make and mix the word with magnetic letters (or letter cards) three times in the second column. They place a check in the box each time they make it. Then they write the word in the last column.
Apply
Give the children a copy of the Making Words Sheet and word cards for the high frequency words used in the lesson.
Have the children complete the sheet as shown above, working alone or in pairs.
After the Activity Read the book Buzz to the children. Then have the children point out all the high frequency words as you go through the book again.

WONG: Minn and Jake
Wong, Janet. “Minn and Jake.” Frances Foster Books. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2003.
I feel Wong did a great job with the short story Minn and Jake. She really captured what it can be like in elementary school. I found it neat how I related with Minn in the sense that I was the tallest girl in the glass that had to stand on the back row for the class picture. The book was very interesting and I sped right through it. There were many true examples of children of that age and how they act. Lola was the perfect example of the girl everyone thought was annoying and always gossiping and daring people to do things. I’m really glad we had to read this book

Wong: Apple Pie 4th Of July

I really really enjoyed this book. I feel it really tells you a story of how a lot of children may feel who's parents aren't from the United States. This little girl is frustrated that she has to work in her parent's store and not get to go to the parade. She is convinced that no one wants Chinese food on the 4th of July. It is neat how the story takes us through her mind. In the end of the story I feel it all works out for her because she gets to see the neatest part of the 4th of July which is the fireworks show. The illustrations were really detailed in this book. They were very colorful and detailed to the story.

I can see how many children may go through this same routine everyday. This shows us how children really do think. I can only imagine how many children group different noises together and use it for a long period of time. This is a really fun book to read to children. Getting to make the noises with the story makes it all the more enjoyable. I enjoyed the bright illustrations throughout the book as well. I was a simple book with a good story.

Hello Everyone!!
Hey everyone!! This is my first blog so I am just going to tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Karlee Warren I am 24 and Graduated in May of 2007 with a degree in HDFS. This is my second semester in the post bach program. I am still debating on getting my masters. I hope we all have a great semester!!!
